I rarely get books in the mail because I don’t usually do ARCs and don’t often enter in giveaways online. I don’t do ARCs because I like to read what I feel like reading without feeling obligated to get to a book specifically because I agreed to review it. I’m not sure why I don’t enter more giveaways, but anyway, I digress.
About two weeks ago I found out I had won books from two different giveaways — Gods Behaving Badly from Serena at Savvy Verse & Wit (via the Hatchette Book Group) and The Magician’s Book from Melanie at The Indextrious Reader (also via the Hatchette Book Group).
Yesterday, both books came to me via UPS, how great is that? I now have a towering stack of books to read, but that’s ok. I’m back in my quiet apartment in Madison, and school doesn’t start until Tuesday, so I bet I can get through a couple before then.

Congratulations on your wins – I love winning contests.
It’s so much fun getting something in the mail, or from a delivery service, that is not a bill or replacement part for some appliance! That’s why I still try to communicate with one friend a month via snail mail. They love the surprise even if the letters are short.
I am with you on the ARC thing. I have only received two in the past, and they were titles that I had explicitly applied to read, but like you, I don’t like that these books automatically take precedence in my reading piles. Additionally, I have not had great luck with the ARCs I’ve received, as both have wound up being not great books. I’m sure there’s something to be said about discovering a great literary treasure before others and at no cost to yourself; alas, this has not been my experience!
Even in an instant age, it’s fun to get something in the mail – especially two books. Especially books you won! I’ve had an extremely good track record at winning books, and I’m always happy with them – mainly because I enter contests for books I’m dying to read.
I’m swearing off ARCs for the moment because I have too high of a stack of them already and it gets annoying after a while to be obligated to read particular books.
bermudaonion: Me too, I don’t know why I don’t enter more often!
care020: I have a college friend in North Carolina who is my pen pal, but we haven’t exchanged letters in awhile. There is a book blogger doing a pen pal thing for 2009, but I can’t for my life remember who it is.
Steph: I got one ARC, and I wasn’t a huge fan of it. I felt awkward writing a less-than-positive review about it, and after that decided I didn’t feel like it anymore.
julia: I love getting mail, it makes my day. I wanted both of the books I won, so I’m excited they came.
Kim L: Yes, I have a lot of books to read and don’t need to add more.
I’m glad to hear you received your book…happy reading!
