This week’s Weekly Geek challenge (courtesy of Dewey at The Hidden Side of a Leaf) is nominate books published in 2008 for our Best Books of 2008. Originally, I was not going to participate because I didn’t think I’d finished any books that were new in 2008. I usually just wait for paperbacks or pick up books used at book stores, rather than spending money on new books. In fact, I thought the last book I read “on time” was the last Harry Potter book.
But then when reading some other blog posts today (specifically Andi at Tripping Towards Lucidity) I realized that I did in fact read one new book in 2008: When You Are Engulfed In Flames by David Sedaris!
If you remember my review of this book, I wasn’t thrilled with it. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t think it was a great book. I did think it was great, a highlight of books I imagine were written in 2008, but just a little disappointing for me because I had such high expectations going into it.
In any case, of the books I’ve read this year that were published in 2008, When You Are Engulfed in Flames is at the top of my list (an admittedly short list 🙂 ). But, I do think it deserves to be on a list of best books from this year.

I’ve yet to try Sedaris, but he’s on my wish list.
Kathy: This is a good Sedaris book. My review was luke-warm, but I had high expectations. Anyone who hasn’t read Sedaris will probably love this book.
I love your blog title, and I’m adding you to my blogroll and bloglines feeds as soon as I get around to it.
I need to read this Sedaris book because I thoroughly enjoyed “Dress Yout Family…”
chartroose: Thank you! I really like the title of your blog too 🙂 Definitely read this book — I don’t like it quite as much as some of this other books, but it’s still very funny.
Excuse me but I don’t find anything “sad” about the Buckeyes thrilling come-from-behind victory in Madison.
Isn’t this blog about books or something like that?

CB: There is nothing good about a win for Ohio State when they’re playing my new football team. You should read the post you’re commenting on, this one is all about books 🙂
Books? Are those like Kindles?*
I love your blog. I wish I had your capacity for reading.
CB: Ha ha, thanks, I’m glad you like the blog — I like it too. Head to j-school, they make you read a lot.
