For those of you that are interested, my last two stories from my summer internship at The Citizen in Hugo, MN are posted on The Citizen website. The first is “A Night Out On The Town” which is about my ride-along with the Lino Lakes Police Department for National Night Out. The second is called “What’s Next for the HFD?” which is a third article in a series about the struggles for local fire departments.
I haven’t linked to many, maybe any, of my stories on this blog, but I’m pretty proud of both of these and wanted to share them. As I re-read them, I can’t help noticing that the writing is a little clunky in places, but overall I think they turned out well. Let me know what you think — constructive criticism is always welcome!

Great articles, it sounds like you had fun riding around in the police car.
I live in Woodbury (MN), right next to a firehouse actually, and I found it interesting to learn that all Woodbury firefighters are trained to be paramedics. The majority of their calls are actually medical, and fires are much rarer. Interesting to learn about how other area towns do it.
Kim L: I was also really surprised to learn about the ratio of medical to fire calls for community fire departments — it seems counter-intuitive, but medical calls are what is actually starting to cause the strain on so many small departments.
