The Sunday Salon: Summer, Part I

The Sunday Salon.comI just finished The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and wow, just wow. Such a good book! It’s one of those that I’m a little sad is over because I loved reading it so much. I was absorbed by all of the characters, totally drawn into their stories, wanting the best for them even though I knew the worst was coming. I think I have to let it settle just a little bit before I even start writing a review.

So far summer has been unexpected. I was so excited to get done with school and have time for reading, yet so far I haven’t really done much at all. I’ve been distracted with work and Boyfriend and friends and the beautiful weather outside. Plus, having no school or outside responsibilities makes me feel untethered and unfocused in keeping up with the things I should do.

Oh yeah, work, I don’t think I’ve mentioned that here yet. I started my summer internship with The Cap Times last Thursday. I’m working as an intern in the online department, posting stories and helping with the website. Hopefully I’ll also get to do some multimedia work — it was a hectic first couple days getting settled, so I don’t know everything I’ll be doing just yet.

In any case, between that and everything else reading (and blogging and reading blogs) just sort of gets pushed to the side, which I don’t really like. I think I kept up with it all so well during school because I was almost constantly focused — it’s easy to keep up when you’re always ready to be doing something. With summer, all that focus just went away and now I don’t know what I’m doing!

I’m sure I’ll get my life into some sort of rhythm in the next couple weeks, but for now I sort of feel discombobulated because I don’t have much that has to get done to keep me focused.

Has summer thrown off your routine as much as it’s thrown off mine? Or do you just not need routine as much as I do in order to remain mostly functional? 🙂

I bought The Book Thief on Buy Indie Day but haven’t been able to get to it yet. Now I want to some kind of bad.

I think a lot of people do what I did: put off reading “The Book Thief” and then wonder why we ever did! Great book.

Yes, my routine changes as summer arrives, since the kids are out of school. They just finished school on Friday! I’m not sure yet how it will affect my blogging, although I think I’ll be getting to read more.

The Book Thief has been on my TBR list. I keep putting it off because it is an unusual book.

WOW Kim, you made The Book Thief sound like it is well worth reading. Will have to add it to my list.

I like summer for the change of pace, and usually try to slow my pace. Some years it’s harder than others, though. This year my class ends and my kids get out of school on June 9, and on June 11 we’re off on vacation.

The kids and I agree that our “not another story about WWII Jews” reflex was agreeably thrown off by who told the story of The Book Thief.

So glad you enjoyed Book Thief! I thought it was fantastic when I read it.

My routines get totally messed up with the warm weather and summer holidays. My boys and the hubs are involved in soccer, then we’ve got weekends at the cottage, kids out of school, we hike alot, the dogs want to be outside constantly, the kids want to go places everyday, oldest son has girlfriend/job which turns me into a taxi service – I hope to relax when I eventually move into a retirement home in Florida 40 years from now 😛
